October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month
Cybersecurity awareness month is an international and annual initiative to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and encourages individuals and organizations to do their part in online safety and data protection. Learn more about how you can do your part below!
What is Cybersecurity Awareness Month?
The initiative started in the United States in 2004, when the President of the United States and Congress declared October to be Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Europe then launched the first Cybersecurity Awareness Month as a pilot in 2012 and ever since October has been internationally known as Cybersecurity Awareness month.
In the States, Cybersecurity Awareness Month is organized by Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), supported by industry partners. In Europe, this initiative comes from the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and European Commission, supported by European Union member states and industry partners.
Although the organization is different in Europe and America, the goal of the campaign remains the same. Organizations promote cybersecurity, share up-to-date online security information and teach citizens the basics of online security and privacy issues.
Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility
where both end-users and organizations
have to cooperate to counter cyber threats.
Both need to take up their role in which personal responsibility and the importance of proactive actions to improve cybersecurity are central. To achieve this goal, several conferences, workshops, training, webinars, presentations, and other similar actions will be held worldwide during the whole month of October. Hundreds of these organized actions have the same goal: to reduce cybersecurity risks and protect yourself and your organization online.
